What if I'd find work during tourist stay?

Hello everyone.

I am about to come to canada as a tourist (as far as I know I dont need to apply or something for that) for 2 months until end of this year and after my stay I want to go back to Germany and start writing my master thesis what is actually working within a company.
Is it possible if I'll get the chance to get work in canada during my stay to apply for a workpermit, even if I would stay in canada? I am from Germany and I actually just have to submit some papers what I can also do from within canada. Would I will get a problem?

I hope someone can help me. If you need more informations about my case I can let you know.

If you find an employer who wants to hire you, then will first have to apply for an LMO (labour market opinion). If the LMO is approved, you can then obtain a work permit by going to the nearest Canada/US land border. More information about LMOs is provided in the link below. Finding an employer who is willing to hire you and willing to obtain an approved LMO is going to be the most difficult step.

not knowing how old you are, (max 35) there's a possibility to get a Working Holiday Visa, an open WP for 1 year.

So I am 27 and Ive done this work and travel visa already until end of august 2012 and I found out that I could use another 'international experience canada' program, the 'young professional program' to get a work permit as of january 2013. In that case I dont need a LMO.
So I'm thinking, if that really works to get a joboffer during my stay as a tourist, to submit all the application stuff to the canadian embassy in germany, hopefully get the workpermit in time that I can go in january to a CAN/US border to reenter and get it done.

My concerns are the submit of the application because I suppose to be in Germany for that but that is just sending some papers via mail AND if that'll work out to just cross the CAN/US border to reenter and get the stamp in my passport.
I mean I read all this stuff but just want to make sure what you guys thinking.

Yep, there you go! Well done, young professionals visa is the way. you don't have to be/stay in germany to do that! all they want is an address in germany. apply on time, make sure you got the application sent by the very 1st of December! But remember, to do the Young Professionals Visa you need a Job offer from your current employer! And, even THIS work permit you can extend!

And another question. I just booked a flight now but it is just a one way ticket. I think I will have enough funds (EUR2000) to prove that I can effort a flight back. Will I get problems at the border because I just have a one way ticket? And they might think I will enter canada to work?

I sent in both cases (WHV and YP) all my stuff to my parents in germany, and they sent it via "Einschreiben" to the embassy. The date on your application doesn't matter, as long as everything is signed. They normally don't care where do you sent it from, as long as you have the (requested) address in Germany. I sent it to my parents mid November, and told them to sent it away the 30th November, latest 1st December, and German Post is efficient.
regarding the ticket, it is not a must since, like you said, you already have 2000€ for funds, i think that was the condition, either one, ticket or money. I booked a ticket anyway,....you never know "who" you meet at the CBSA. Anyway, they didn't ask me for a return ticket in both cases, whilst the second time doesn't count, since i applied for Young Professionals, and to get it you need a Job offer, and if you have a job, they don't mind the return ticket.... job=money=funds. But, that's entirely up to you to decide. Just make sure, to print at least Bank statement from the day before (or the latest possible), or, if your bank does it, maybe a certified Bank Statement. In general, CBSA are strict and professional, and they also can see (and judge) your personality (looking smart dressed, business, tie, polite etc) they won't make much fuss about it. You know what i mean. Don't forget your Police Clearance from Germany for Young Professionals! That takes about 2-3 weeks and 13€! If you need help with that,...gimme a shout..

the criminal record I ordered this week already but thanks for letting me know.

Im going to book a flight for april but still with a date a can change afterwards, so then i can tell the border officers I wanna stay for 6months as a tourist and can show them a flight. that seems for me the best way to not get trouble at the border, right?

mh... thats late...available end of november? i was sniffing around on their website (2009) way before December and got everything printed and ready to go...maybe it has changed. just get it ready as soon as you can, "Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst"
Well, i think you know that, you need a job offer for Young Professionals, and the max. validity will be 1 year (but is renewable!) as long as it is mentioned in your job offer, like salary, start/end date, working hours etc. Try to book the ticket as far as possible in the future. They don't mind if the ticket needs to be renewed before your work permit expires, as long as you have the ticket, having a ticket and renew it is/can be cheaper than not having one at all, and buying one last minute, especially for long distance flights...they know that, i always took british airways (with 1stop London Heathrow) Frankfurt-Montreal, Aircanada flights are possible direct to frankfurt, but a bit more expensive, but i don't know where you land here.
I haven't read the conditions for this year, but if you're lucky you don't even need a return ticket, since you get a (closed) work permit for 1 year, so, there will be funds.

My advise: get job offer for 1 year and buy ticket as far possible in the future.

I'm sure you know there's no need to buy a ticket at the time of the application! (except of course they changed the conditions this year, i didn't need one last year) Buy it a soon as you get your Permit (6-8 weeks, mid/end January) or "just" before you leave germany...to push the moment of your return ticket, as long as you have it at the border.

Ive decided to buy a return ticket with a flexible date. right now where i enter canada as a tourist i cant book that flight that far in the future just 6 months from now on since i want to go end of october already.
I hope with that flight i wont get any problems when I'll enter canada as a tourist end of october. and im going to use the same flight when i reenter canada at the US/CAN border in january to get the workpermit stamp in my passport. i know i still have to show them some funds what might be ok end of october (with a return flight and EUR1500) and I read that i'll need a bit more when i will enter with a work permit but this also covered.

shouldn't be a problem...you got the ticket, and the funds, and the job.... the rest you can explain them at the border.

Yes, the flight tickets are expensive, i had to experience it. The british airways flight were the "cheapest" tickets suitable to my needs.

If you have the funds as you said and you can prove it to the CBSA, and you have the joboffer, then you don't need a return ticket, IMO.


I'm just a bit confused now, because:

That sounds like a lot of "work" (paperwork) for just 2 months stay, or work, in canada, if you want to go back to germany then.

In this 2-2.5 months I am going to see if I can get the work somewhere to write my masterthesis. this work would start as of january 2013 since i have to wait anyways for the application of the 'young professional program'. Actually I have already a work offer but I never can be 100% sure if I'll get it until I have the workpermit in my hands, right
so all that work would be for after my 'tourist'-stay.

first: i recommend to remove the email address from this last post out of privacy reasons

okee...2-3 months is fine, but that needs " a little preparation". Because if you come here, you have to fill out your "landing form" in the plane and you have to state for how long you intend to stay (max 6 months anyway). But, for how long you actually CAN stay will be decided by the CBSA Officer, based on your "intentions", attitude (;D), your funds and/or possible return ticket (which helps if you want to stay for longer). The longer you stay, the more funds he might ask for, but a return ticket will help a lot in this particular case, since you can show that you really want to return! Once arrived here, and you have your Job offer in your hands, get ready to send your docs to Germany, if you're the "first" it should be issued in about 6-8 weeks (end of January, i had my WHV mid January issued, even if the actual letter was dated with 5th December, 3 days after they received it! Comes first, draws first! )
Ok so far so good. Now, In case you DON'T have a return ticket (just enough funds!), you could arrange it that way, that as soon the "Young Professionals" Visa arrives at your Home Address, somebody sends it to you in Canada, and you just do some serious "flagpoling" and get your permit at the nearest border, that way you could save the expensive return ticket, provided you have enough funds to get a permission from the CBSA Office to stay for 3months. (until your Permit is ready)
You could ask a friend (or family of course) if you could borrow some money for 3 months, deposit it on your bank account, get a certified bank statement or similar to show funds. i took an original "kontoauszug" from the day before i left, just in case, ...i didn't need it, so,... i also don't know whether they would have accepted it!

So, that's what I would do.

You know what they say: You need something to organized? Put a german on it! hehe
