What happens if you are denied after waiting 2 years for an inland application after marrying a Canadian citizen?

If you are an American waiting and living in Canada with your spouse going through the lengthy inland process, and after 2 years or so you end up being denied I understand that you cannot appeal. At that point are basically ordered to leave Canada? Or...do you just stay but without any normal resident's rights?

If you get a rejection, you will soon get an order to leave the country. If you don't leave, you'll get a removal order and in that case you can kiss all future Canadian visas goodbye and banned to enter Canada for several years!

You could appear their decision, but that takes months, if not years. In the meantime, you would not be able to work, to attend school, etc...

Source? There no appeal rights to the Immigration Appeal Division for spousal applications "in Canada". There is leave to appeal to the Federal Court, but a removal would have kicked in well before that.
