hello,

I am a pr and I applied to sponsor my husband last year, after we mailed the application a month later I was approved to sponsor him now the papers are in his country waiting for the approval, its been almost a year since we have not heard anything...is it normal to take that long....since we did the whole process I decided to live with him and wait for his papers I called immigration and they said I was allowed to stay with him for 3 years but I never asked if that would affect our application, could it affect it?maybe its taking too long because i am not in canada? can some one help me ...

What country is your husband applying from? This makes a difference - some countries have very long processing times, and a wait of more than a year might be normal there.

Since you are a PR, you have to stay in Canada while your husband's application is being processed. Short visits are OK; long visits are not OK, and three years is impossible. The call centre agent meant that if you stayed out of Canada for three years, you could still keep your PR status by staying in Canada the other two years (out of five years, PRs must stay in Canada for 2 years to keep their PR status.)

Your signature says the app started processing in Columbia on Oct 28, 2009. Did your husband receive any letter or email from the processing office down there to let you know it was in process or did you see this information on ecas?

If you can see in process in ecas, then you should beable to contact the processing office in Columbia by email to request more information. Such as resending the letter if you never received it. If you can't see in process in ecas, than either the file hasn't been started or hasn't arrived and you should try to contact Mississauga to see if they have information. According to CIC's website the processing time for Bogota is 10-15 months, so you are actually still within their processing times.

Your move *may* have affected your application and only CIC can confirm if that is the case.

This link shows the average processing times:http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/05-fc-spouses.asp
Bogota is 10 to 15 months, on average, so your time is still within the normal range.
Since you're a PR, I'd get back to Canada right away, gather up proof you are in Canada, and send in to the embassy to be added to your file.
