Well, for example our marriage certificate was issued in Italy, but has French translation. Does a photocopy of this need to be notarized (since CIC accepts French)? Are you saying only documents in English don't need to be notarized? I'm confused now
.
So is the original marriage certificate written in Italian? And there's a French translation underneath or something? That's kind of confusing. If I were you, I would do an official translation for this document since that's kind of a grey area. Better safe than sorry. Maybe someone else can comment who has encountered this before.
And yes, just photocopies of the English/French documents are okay
unless CIC specifically asks for the original or a notarized copy of a file. Check your country specific guide for details on what needs to be a certified copy. My knowledge comes from doing my application for the USA, so it may be different. One document that specifically needs to be notarized that comes to mind is the statutory declaration of common law union, which isn't applicable for you.
According to CIC:
Translation of documents
Any document that is not in English or French must be accompanied by:
the English or French translation; and
an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
a certified copy of the original document.
Note: An affidavit is a document on which the translator has sworn, in the presence of a commissioner authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the translator is living, that the contents of their translation are a true translation and representation of the contents of the original document. Translators who are certified members in good standing of one of the provincial or territorial organizations of translators and interpreters of Canada do not need to supply an affidavit.
Important information. Translations by family members are not acceptable.
