What could explain passport copy request?

I know that IRCC might want a proof of that you have lived in Canada for at least 3 years, but I just don't understand if there is any standard for them to do this request. A friend of mine travelled only 2 times abroad and has so many days over the minimum required to apply, but IRCC still requested for copy. I did not get this request yet, but maybe they will send to me. I have seen so many people getting it and this might delay the final decision. What you guys could say about this matter? My friend who travelled 2 times abroad does not have any stamp in his passport because he travelled to the country where he is from.

The reason why they request this is because CBSA only started recording exits from the country by air in June 2020. Prior to June 2020, CBSA didn't have the record of anyone exiting the country by air. They request for passport pages hoping to see any stamps there and then verify if you have truthfully declared the length of travels and the countries you've mentioned in the physical presence calculator.

If there are no stamps on the passport (like in the case of your friend), then they'll probably accept whatever he has mentioned as the truth AFAIK.
