I have a few questions regarding Permanent Residency in Alberta. My sister graduated from an Ontario college under the Logistics and Transportation program (Business) in 2023. She currently holds a PGWP and is working and living in Cold Lake, Alberta. She is employed at Tim Hortons as a Team Member. What would be the best pathway for her to obtain PR in Canada? Is she eligible to apply for PR under the Alberta Opportunity Stream?

Thank You!

She is not elgible for AOS stream so she needs to focus on Express Entry. Her EOI score and NOC must be selected through her EE profile. PNPs for every province are cut by 50% so think Alberta only has about 5,000 spots.

So she is not eligible for any of the Alberta PR programs?
She is only eligible through the Express Entry stream. Look at the numbers in the pools too!

2024 and early 2025, the AAIP will consider an invitation to apply based on the following priorities:

  • family connection and primary occupation in demand
  • Dedicated Health Care Pathway
  • Accelerated Tech Pathway
  • Law Enforcement Pathway
  • priority sectors, such as agriculture, construction

Her score is 400.
So today’s draw was 537. She needs to figure out how to increase her score. Scores will come down now that LMIAs will no longer count for EE points but not that low. With cuts to immigration numbers she wants to increase by around 100.

But if she finds a job in priority sector to be eligible for AAIP? Is cook job position eligible for AAIP?

Have you read the AINP site at all? Only through EE and if her EE and EOI scores as well as NOC are selected. Cook is not a priority sector.

Priority sectors
The following pathway requirements apply to those invited to apply under Priority Sector draws.

At the time your application is submitted and assessed:

  • your primary occupation in your Express Entry profile must be an eligible agriculture or construction occupation
  • if you are invited based on having an Alberta job offer, your job offer occupation must be an eligible agriculture or construction occupation

Actually, she hasn’t created an EE profile yet, which is why I’m asking if she could find a job in a priority sector.

She can certainly try. It needs to be an eligible job in agriculture or construction.

She may be eligible if she has a job in construction or agriculture, and her EOI score and NOC are selected but through EE. Given the cut of 50% of PNPs then Alberta can maybe invite around 5000, and there are 27,000 profiles just in AOS which she isn‘t eligble for and 2600 in priority. Her chances are almost nil.

Thank you for providing the information.

Hi Guys,

Same question. What do you think is my brother's best option to get PR. He graduated a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management outside Canada (He has the ECA ready). Visited here in Alberta last 2023 and was able to get a Work Permit in the Food Industry for 2 years. He has a nice IELTS score.

I saw somewhere that its hard to get through the Tourism & Hospitality Stream and he wont qualify under Family connection Stream because his job is not in-demand.

How about Alberta Opportunity Stream? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
