Hello
All
I have finished my Bachelors degree from the United States(US) and currently pursuing my master degree here in the state too. I have been residing here from past eight years. I am confidient that I can gather all the necessary alternative documents for IELTS. I am also aware that "non native speakers are strongly recommended to take the IELTS exam." Still, I am just curious to find out about the success ratio of not taking IELTS exam. Anybody with experiences, please provide somelight on the subject matter.

Thanks

i have no experience with that but if you do not take IELTS you leave it to the immigration officers view to determine your English points. if you have been living and the US for 8 years and you obviously speak and write really good English then why not take it and save yourself the trouble of having an IO who woke up with a bad hair day?

If your are not a native speaker, do IELTS. It is the simplier way to proove your proficiency without leaving any doubts, plus what might be your chances of getting a 16 point score under a migration officer point of view?. Moreover, It is obvious that will delay significantly your application.

Dear Sagar,

CIC doesn't compel u to take IELTS. They ONLY have a scoring system for Language capabilities. One may safely choose to ignore it, at a risk of scoring less for those points, if u think ur total points shall be enough. All the CIC wants is SOME proof. It might be by way of IELTS (or CELPIP) OR A 'Written Evidence'.

However, the Written Evidence is NOT CONCLUSIVE. You are then at the mercy of the VO. Note CICs Own Words:
/Quote/
"If you believe that you can clearly demonstrate your level of proficiency through a written submission, follow the instructions in the table below... CIC strongly advises that you ONLY CHOOSE this option if your first language is English or French (READ MOTHER TONGUE)... Note: Test results will be used as conclusive evidence of your language proficiency"...
/Unquote/

The bottomline is, if one thinks he/she can garner enough points thru the other 'selection criterions', he/she can ignore the Tests and can ONLY SUBMIT the Written Evidence. The same is well detailed in the IMM-7000, Application Guide.

But generally speaking, it is always good to take the IELTS (or CELPIP).

Regards.

Hello
Thank you all for your suggestion. I am definetely up for IELTS but I am also wondering if my spouse needs to take the IELTS exam too. Is it going to hurt our application if she scored less?Or she does not have to give IELTS exam. As far as I know, the CIC does not state whether or not spouse needs to take the IELTS. Your's discussion on this topic is highly appreciated.
Thanks

I presume you are the main applicant. There is no points for spouses language ability so no need for spouse to take it. If your spouse does take it and scores well, mention it in a cover letter. Perhaps they would appreciate the fact that it would be easier for your spouse to be economically active. However, this would not help with points at all. My personal opinion is that it is a waste of money.

If your are not a native speaker, to save time and avoid taking any chance take IELTS exam. it is easier way to score perfect 16. It also saves you some delays. If you do not take any language proficiency exam you are at discretion of immigration officer for your language points.

I think it is important to know if there is any body on this forum who has sailed without language proficiency test, in spite of being a non native english speaker.

I read in some forum that application has been rejected for not providing any language assessable proof. Don't remember now which forum. What I still remember is the person didn't take any language test on English as he was in USA for five years in F1 and completed his degree from a US university. He wrote that he included a written explanation in English on why he didn't take the test. Better not take any chance.

Dear all,

Not taking IELTS won't FAIL YOU in the Canadian Immigration Processing system. He/she fails only when that said applicant couldn't garner the overall 67.

As explained in my previous post, Without an IELTS (or CELPIP), one is at the mercy of the VO (referred also as the IO). Who would usually give a lesser score. Remember, the 'written evidence' cannot prove the English 'speaking' aspect, u don't get any marks in that sub-class from the VO. Thus, u cannot get the max score in 'language skills'. Which might be a deal breaker.

Now, if one's total score thru the other criterion gets him/her more than 67, he would successfully sail thru even w/out the IELTS. And in such cases the VO/IO will not even ask for the IELTS, even if the pax is a 'non-native' user.

But, the above is a RISK, are we prepared to take it? Given the fragile position of our case processing, it's is genuinely best to take the IELTS or CELPIP.

Regards.

"Native English speakers" mean people having Passports( citizens) from few recognized English speaking countries like UK, Aus,USA, Ireland etc.So, Applicants having the [passports] from above countries NEED NOT take IELTS . But, passport with other countries even though they are living in English speaking counties since ages have to take IELTS!!! :)
