I've always wondered, do they mean convenient like.... to be able to get the health benefits and all that stuff? Or do they mean people marrying just to live together? Just curious, thanks guys : )

marriage of convenience means when 2 people get married not because they are a couple, but because they want to gain access to something - a status (Canada PR), benefits, etc....

It means exactly what it says. People get married not because they are an actual couple, but because one (or both) want to obtain something they otherwise couldn't get such as residency, healthcare etc.

My idea of convenient marriage is a 24/7 wedding chapel.

CIC's idea is that you marry someone because you want to use that marriage as a way to get into Canada.

My idea of a convenient marriage is its reall convenient we got married since we love each other, live together, and put up with each other! Marrying someone else would've been sooo silly :p

If you aren't marrying for love, it's not a "real" marriage in the West. We like our mushy romance and commitment.

i seeeee, pretty obvious what a marriage of convenience is. sometimes i worry that theyre going to look at mine and my husband's relationship as unusual because of our difference in age and how soon we got married. i am 20 and he is 32, and we got married a year and 1 month after we had been talking to each other (only 10 months after we met in person though)... but i really do love him more than anything, and i want nothing more than to be with him and be happy together. the best times of my life are when i am/was with him. especially when it felt like those 6 months we lived together would last forever. i don't really think the length of the relationship shows your love, i think all of what you've been through and managing to stick together through all those hard times is what shows it. i included so much proof and so many sappy love letters, including the very long wedding vows we both wrote, that i hope it makes them look past all the technicalities of our relationship. i know it's unusual for a 20 year old to marry a 32 year old by today's standards, but it's not like that one bit and i hope the 150 pictures and 5 page letter about my love for him (and his for me) is enough to show them that! although i guess if they really wanted to see what we're like an interview will do the trick lol, i have no problem at all blabbing about my love for him all day since it's pretty much endless : ) <3

From what I understand, any relationship or marriage under two years is looked at harder than longer relationships. However, if you consider common-law needs only 1 year to apply and most marriage people apply shortly after marriage, I think most applications are under two years.

I assume you're the 20 year old sponsor and he's the 32 year applicant... I don't think the VO will be worried about your love for him. I think they would be more concerned he's really in love with you and not using you to gain entry into Canada. (And yes, this does happen, more often than I care to think about.) You can expect further scrutiny if you're of different ethnic backgrounds and/or religions. This is because of what Immigration sees most often in fraud cases.

Now, I'm not saying anything about your relationship.... I obviously don't know you, just sharing what I've learned. And I apologize in advance if I made any assumptions about you and they're wrong. :)

No worries! The one assumption was wrong, but it was just a tiny mistake lol. I am the 20 year old applicant, and he is the 32 year old sponsor. I don't know if that makes any difference at all. I'd say we put together enough proof of our relationship even if it is not as long as some others. I pretty much included something about every single month since we've know eachother, the stories behind every visit and every single detail about the development of our relationship. I don't mean to get all personal, but I did basically save his life. At the time I met him he was very very sick with an eating disorder and has come very close to death. Meeting me brought back a real spark in his personality, and brought back that feeling of happiness he lost from being so sick with such a severe disorder and gave him a reason to change his life around for the better, so that he could live to see me and spend a long healthy life with me. Obviously there's more to it than just that and I'm not 100 percent sure, but I do believe that this might make our case much stronger :) At least i am hoping it does. We both have tattoos and everything about our relationship and how it started and what not too! Made sure i included pictures of them in our application

That will give you less to worry about. I hope you included the story of how you helped him with his eating disorder with your application as part of the story. Just the little bit you told me shows a lot about the relationship!

Absolutely! Included the story of how the eating disorder started, how i helped him get through it and what his weight is now and how it progressed etc., as well as before and after pictures of him when he was skinny and him now. I was even going to go as far as getting some of his medical records to show the severity of it, but I figured the pictures of how skinny he actually was was enough proof instead of having to jump through hoops to get medical records lol! I'm glad someone from the outside can see the genuinity of our relationship, and that age is only but a number... at least in our case it is : ) It always makes me feel much better getting second opinions!
