I have applied to UBC for MASc in ECE 2014 Sept, one professor replied asking if i am interested and he also told that when he was not able to select the application in the system. When i enquired about it in the university they told that my application was already closed as i no prof is ready to take and if any prof wants to select he should email the grad dept for reopening my application. I mailed this to prof but he never responded back  also i tried to get him on the phone but he was not available.
???
Does anybody has this kind of experience before?

My profile
Btech electrical and electronics with 70% Aggregate.
worked in an software MNC for 4 years
TOEFL 95

I am planning to reapply to some universities this time
What are my chances to get in these universities.

1.University of Waterloo Meng and MAsc
2.UBC MASc
3.University of torronto MASc
4.Uniiversity of ottawa Meng
5.University of Alberta MSc
6.University of calgary MASc or Meng
7.SFU MASc or Meng
8.Mc master (this university recommended GRE, but i have no gre ) will they weigh high for GRE? :'( ???

I am not going to apply all, but u need the univesity with most chance.
Please let me know if there is any other good university.

Thanks in advance. :D

you have to apply and find your chances, none can calculate chances in university admission.

look carefully about their requirements for admission, I think you missed something, and I have friends with very strong profile academics and GRE/GMAT applying to more or less 10 universities and getting admission from one university , so you have to take your all chances, else your one year will be wasted.

yes, i understood. but i cannot understand why a professor who asked me if i am still interested in the course  and then disappear just like that. That too from a highly reputed university like UBC :'(. only score which i probably lacked was toefl, recommended was 100 but the website have informed that even 95 is ok. but could that be reason?

Thanks for your info

Shit happens. And mostly happens with the well reputed univs. U got him to talk wid U. U were very lucky.

score which i probably lacked was toefl, recommended was 100 but the website have informed that even 95 is ok. but could that be reason?
No. That can't be the reason. If that was the case, they would have told U specifically.

yes.But that is not Professionalism. if he dont wants to accept me, he can clearly state that. Probably i shouldn't expect professionalism from even the high reputation universities :(

Hi Josthom,

1. University of Waterloo requires that you contact the professor in order to be able to get accepted and percentage requirement is 78% equivalent to CAD universities(You can check for India, what they want;mostly a first class with distinction). It's a MUST. I was rejected by this University for this very reason because my professor didn't contact me even though I had the requisite percentage. If you are willing to go through all this again, give it a try :p
2. UBC has TOEFL requirements(iBT:100) which are higher than your score. However, I suppose they are flexible in their score for ECE department(iBT:95). I am not sure but maybe this was the problem in your case.
3.University of Toronto too requires a GRE in my knowledge. Please check this. So, if you aren't giving or haven't given, this may not be the Univ for you.
4.I don't know abt U o Ottawa.
5.I had researched on U O Alberta and atleast for my field (RF and Microwave Engg;ECE) , their lab isn't great. Kindly check for your field. Maybe for DSP,Embedded, software, etc, it's good.
6. Univ of Calgary has an amazing lab which is what attracted me towards this Univ because I have friends studying there and they don't want to move from there and are ready to even pursue PhD later( I will be going here for Masters in Fall'14).
7. SFU is a very good Univ again for ECE however, they require a hell lot of recommendations from academic backgrounds. If you are able to obtain them, go for it!

Hi aparna.bhardwaj

Thanks for your patience to write such a long and detailed explanations.

One reason why i have selected these universities are the research. i am looking for the smart grid research. university of waterloo, university of toronto and UBC has best of these research in the chronological order.Other universities also have that but not that strong.

Now regarding the universities.
1.U of W : they have only mentioned that a first class engineer. My certificates shows that i am a first class engineer. but i dont know how the canadian universities takes it.

2.U of t : similar to above, first class. NOw about the GRE: "The GRE is not required. However, applicants who have taken the GRE may enter their scores on the ECE WEB SYSTEM." I don't know what does they mean by this, will it be a disadvantage for me?

3.UBC: i am half minded , as one of the professor behaved in a weird manner before , i tends me to believe that all are like that, though its probably not.

All other universities have some sort of research in this field but not good as these universities

i have a query, McMaster university recommend gre but not mandatory, do you know how much they weigh the gre?

Thanks
