I don't think it's so much to do with age, but more to do with, "what works for you in South Africa, may not necessarily work the same way for you in Canada". Just because you are successful in your home country doesn't mean you are going to be as successful in a foreign country. In extreme cases sometimes, you almost have to start all over again.
I have a friend who was a editor of a famous newspaper back in her country, but when she came here, the only job she could find was to work once a week in a florist shop and earn the minimum wage. It's a very common challenge that a lot of immigrants face. Lots of immigrants are discouraged because they have difficulty fitting into the local culture, that they quit trying after a while and just stick to their own community group, mingle with their own people only. Even if they have immigrated and lived here for 10 or 15 years, they are still unable to blend in well with the Canadian society in general.. which is an important factor if you want to succeed in Canada.
