My understanding of Family Class sponsorship is that the Sponsor is not allowed to me on any Social Assistance in order to sponsor a spouse for the duration of the Sponsorship obligation, correct? What benefits are the Sponsor, Sponsored person and children (have Canadian Citizenship already) still eligible for? For example 1. Low-income housing/subsidized housing and/or 2. low-income child benefit and/or 3. Subsidized day care?

Hi Intertwined,

I don't know if I would call it a benefit, but as far as the social programs that you mentioned, you would have to be assesed based your total household income. There are many subsidized programs that you may be eligible for however waiting lists for such programs increase/decrease dramatically depending on where you live. For instance the wait list for subsidized housing in toronto is several years long.
There are some exceptions made: for new immigrants, woman who have suffered abuse... etc.
You should contact the Housing corp. where you live for more information.

I live in geared to income and there was no problem with me sponsoring my husband.

Hi, I know it's been a while since your post, but I wondered if you ever got clarification on this subject?. My OH and I are in exactly the same position regarding 1) BC Rental assistance, 2) Child Care Subsidy. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

rental assistance is that welfare it sounds like it but if u live in sibsidize housing u will not have a problem but if they give you money each mth apart from EI, disability, CTB OAS,CPP basically welfare is what disqualify u so if you live in a house where u pay 30% of your income you qualify but if the government mails u money monthly and its not under 1 of the above it may be welfare

Probably you can explain a little more what rental asistance is for BC I live in ON

Subsidized housing and subsidized child care does not qualify as welfare. Welfare is welfare also social assistance...that is what will disqualify you...
