Please go to the following LInk
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/about-pr.asp

It will address following questions well
•What permanent residents can do
•What permanent residents cannot do
•Keeping your permanent resident status
•Losing your permanent resident status

Once you apply the Procedure take about a year to get PR. To maintain the PR you need to live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period.

PR gives you almost the same rights as a citizen except you can not vote and some government jobs are off limits to you.

If you commit a crime you can lose your PR and be deported and if you don't meet the residency requirements you lose your PR. Like ankit_20 has said, you must stay in Canada for at least 2 out of every 5 years to keep your PR.

To get citizenship, you must have been in Canada for 3 years out of the last 4 as a PR. It takes about a year to process citizenship.

Once you are already a citizen, you can get a passport in 1 day if you ask to expedite and pay a bit more.

However, to get to the point of becoming a citizen can take 5 years or more. First you apply for PR, that can easily take a year. Then you come to Canada, after 3 years apply for citizenship and that is only if you never left Canada in those 3 years, otherwise you have to wait to apply. Processing citizenship can take a year, sometimes more.

After you have lived for three years (1095 days) in last 4 years.

So effectively if you live continously for 1095 days after landing you can apply for citizenship after three years. Once u are citizen you can get the PP
