Waiting time for visitor visa

I would like to know if its normal the delay on answering for a visa application, cause my wife have applied 20 days ago, and the website said she should receive an answer on 10 days. She´s going for a congress in one and half week and we are very afraid to miss it due the delay on this process, We have payed for flights, hotel, subscription and it was so costly. Does anyone have any idea if there is a way to try to accelerate this process?

i applied 30 days ago, their website says 8 day to process, still no update. the
