Hi everyone,

I graduated from a Canadian University in January and I am wondering if I should rather apply for a PGWP or an OW? Based on the come to Canada tool, I can apply for either. Does one permit make more sense than the other while waiting for PR decision to be made?

We have been invited to apply for permanent residency and submitted everything last week. So, right now we are waiting for the final decision to be made. My husband is the primary applicant for the PR application and I am included as his spouse.

Thank you!

When I did the "find out if you are eligible to apply for"-tool, I only went through it to get my profile for the PGWP application started. It, however, suggested at the end that from the data I have entered, I "may be eligible for a PGWP and OWP", which surprised me too.

I think the tool might have suggested the OWP because I had to answer questions if I have applied and submitted an application for PR, which I answered with yes. But I guess this would only make sense to me if the OWP that is suggested by the tool is the same as the BOWP...?

Based on what you said, you don't qualify for an OWP. Only the principle application is eligible to apply for the bridging OWP based on the PR application and subject to other requirements as well. So, your best (and may be only) option is to apply for the PGWP. That said, you may be eligible for a spouse OWP through a different route, if your husband has a full-time job in a skilled occupation. So, I would recommend you to apply for the PGWP on your own and you will be eligible to work once you submit your application. Good Luck!

Note that as you are currently an international student and have finished your studies, you are only allowed to be working if you have applied for a PGWP. If you are working right now without having applied for a PGWP, you are working illegally.
