Some places won't allow you to volunteer unless you have a SIN !????!

Kind of defeats the idea of volunteering, doesn't it.

Hopefully you can find something you enjoy. Let us know what happens!

That's rediculous, as it is even illegal for a job to ask for your SIN before there is a job offer made. Even credit card companies , it's optional to give them that. So for a place where you are going to volunteer at to ask for it, is out right wrong.

Hi Justina, some places need to ask for additional documents due to the nature of what you are volunteering for. For instance working with children etc.

It all depends on the type of volunteering - some even have to do security checks or screening as you would want to ensure they check anyone volunteering to work with children aren`t on a pedophile list or if there was cash handling they need to ensure you are bondable.

However I am not sure if you are in the Toronto area, but places like http://www.thestop.org/ are just happy to have volunteer to assist with food preparation etc to help the needy :)
