Hi everyone- I am getting concerned about the voluntary work I did before starting paid work. I would really like your input, particularly from those who have been in a similar position.

While I was looking for paid work, I did some unpaid and voluntary work at a law clinic, hosted by a law school. Would this create an issue, as our PGWP says no for any academic courses? This was not a course of any kind, I was working as a research analyst at law clinic, hosted by a law school though. I did it so I could get some work experience, even if it was unpaid.

Now, I am getting worried about the implications of this on my application. Help please!

Can someone please share their input, really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Best,
Bend

Are you planning on including this as your one year minimal work experience? If that’s the case, you cannot. You can only claim permanent paid job either full time or part time for points. So I would not disclose this as work experience. It is just volunteer activities. PGWP doesn’t say you cannot volunteer for free while looking for jobs.

Thank you for your reply! No no I am just planning on including this in personal history, not work history. Would that be fine?

Ah that should be fine. I think when PGWP says “no study” it means studying towards a degree.

Either it was volunteer work, or you were studying. Why are you confusing the two?

You can include volunteer work in your personal history, but should not list it as employment.
