If you're American, all you have to do is to show up at the border crossing with your passport and hope they let you in.

I live in Niagara Falls and have crossed the boarder to the USA several times (I can't even count its so so close, closer for me to reach a hospital in the USA then one here where I live) as I have a number of family members that reside there. All you need is your passport. 2008 was the last time I was able to cross without my passport ( i just showed drivers license). I have never been stoped or questioned. I've either said I was going to visit family or going shopping (its cheaper). Once I was pulled over entering back into Canada. Don't know why. They wanted to know what was in my trunk (nothing was in there)

My fiance, is Italian. When she came to Canada. no problems. She didnt even have a return ticket. Asked her what she was doing (she said visiting family) and asked her a few times if she was going to work and if she brought money for her stay (she told themwhat she brought: 1,000 euro and credit card) and they stamped her passport 6 months.

Just be honest. I have been reading a lot of stuff on here and some people really get paranoid and people writing back saying a lot of stuff like "if they let you in" so I thought I would offer my personal experiences going between because I know some people on here would probably like to know of some other experience.

Oh the only other time I have been hasseled in an airport was in London-Gatwick coming from Italy (I am dual canadian/italian citizen). Basically they wanted to know what I did in Canada. So I basically told them my life storey. He cut me off around the 5 minute mark and let me through.

If you think you are doing something suspicious you're going to look suspicious.

As an American, you shouldn't have a problem going to Canada to visit. I am also American and cross the border into Canada about once a week. I have never been pulled over going into Canada. All you need is a passport, which is simple enough to get if you don't already have one. You have plenty of time to get it. You don't need to tell them you are getting married when you go over. Just tell them you are going to visit your boyfriend, answer all of their questions honestly (they are trained to be able to tell if you are lying) and don't look too nervous. You aren't doing anything wrong by going to visit your boyfriend. You don't need a temporary residence visa, but from what people are saying on this forum, you can request one at the border. Americans do not need a visitor's visa to stay in Canada, and you are allowed to stay for up to 6 months. So, I believe that after 6 months, if you just left the country and went back to the US, and then reentered Canada, you'd be ok to stay for another 6 months. But I'm not sure about that.

I just wanted to tell you that the border people aren't really that scary, and you shouldn't be as worried as you sound.
