So I applied for a visitor visa this year on April 19th from Bahrain where it states the processing time usually takes 19 days. I am currently studying at a medical school in Bahrain and just finished my first year. I applied for this research medical related program at UBC in Vancouver and got accepted and the program starts on June 4th! But they still havent given me a response to the decision of my application yet. I have sent in enquiries and made multiple calls and they finally replied last week saying that they are doing background checks. Does anyone have any idea how long this could take? I would ideally like to reach there when the program starts however at this stage I am thinking its highly unlikely that I do. I have given in my medical information which has been passed/approved as well as my biometrics and all required documents as well as a letter of explanation. Any comments or suggestions to how I handle the situation?

I know that this is probably not what you want to hear, but there is not a whole lot that you can do. CIC will take its due course.

:( I just dont get how my background check could take so long, I am 19 years old, I have no criminal records and I've been granted an American visa for 5 years and I had a canadian TRV when I was a baby, as well as a UK visitor visa last year. I even provided them with my results for my first semester at medical school.

Also, on my application once I had submitted the biometrics the status changed from 'We need the applicant's biometrics' to 'Not needed at this time'; does that mean that they received my biometrics?

Yes, that is exactly what that means.
