Hi,

I will be applying for a visitor visa and I read that validity is usually the length of the passport. But I am not concerned about that my concern is a TRV limit. I will be showing that I'll be staying at a hotel etc. So, will I get a 6-month stamping? If not in what way I can get a 6-month stay possible? I will be applying for a multiple entry visa.

Any help would be appreciated.

duration of stay will be determine by the CBSA when u arrive (visa validity period is nothing to do with this validity)

also in application there is no option to select for single or multiple entry (this will provided by cic officer)

Just to add that general advice as a visitor to only ask for a 2-3 week stay as a visitor.

As above reply how Long you can stay is decided by CBSA on arrival but if you ask for a stay in months then increases chances of refusal.

If CBSA sees you as a genuine visitor then chances are you get a default 6 months anyway just do not ask for in the application

Whether you get single or multiple entry depends the the credibility of the application

But what if I plan to stay longer than 2-3 weeks? How can I extend it?

1. By not looking like you're moving to Canada, or by asking for six months at the border (literally, don't ask the CBSA officer for six months). If you get through Customs without getting an entry stamp with a limited date in your passport (which by far is the default) then you're good for six months. If you pester the border officer by demanding six months, your stay will be limited or you may find yourself refused entry.

2. If you do get a limited stay, then you can apply internal from Canada to extend your stay.

That is correct! I am also going there to get married and after that, I will leave Canada and go back to university to continue my Master's but I was wondering if I had 6 months stay then I could always go back after finishing the uni but this will all be troublesome if I am only granted a month stay.

For 1. What if the officer asks me for "how long you're planning to stay?" What should be my response?

Honestly, need 6 months I was told that's not what I should be asking for. then?
On the surface, in a visa/border officer’s eyes, there’s no valid or good reason for a grad student with a Canadian partner to be in Canada for 6 months. It doesn’t take 6 months to get married in Canada. You’ll have to recalibrate your plans and purpose of this trip more carefully with a reasonable time period.

Here is the thing. I am actually only going to be in Canada for around 3-4weeks then have to come back and join my university. Now the reason I want 6 months is because I will be graduating in September and then I wanna go back to Canada. Say, if I only get 4 weeks to stay, then I don't know how will I be able to go back? What do you suggest?

Visitor status ends when you leave. Even if you get 6 months on the first entry, that means zero when you return on the second entry. You will be evaluated as a new visitor.

Oh is it? So, I need to apply for a new visitor visa? That sounds wrong. What's the point of multiple entry?

You are confusing a TRV with a visa. The TRV in your passport only allows you to travel to Canada and apply for entry. The visa is what CBSA gives you at the POE. CBSA are the only ones who can grant you entry to the country and determine how long you can stay. The document in your passport does not guarantee you will be granted entry to Canada by CBSA.
