My girlfriend and I are trying to get our friend from Bali, Indonesia to visit us for a couple weeks. He is a friend we made when on vacation over there and he was our mountain bike guide. We had such a good time with him and became such good friends that we want to pay for him to come visit us for two weeks and mountain bike here in Canada.
We just submitted a visitor visa application on his behalf (as his representative) and it was rejected for the following reasons:

• travel history
• Family ties in Canada and in country of residence
• Personal assets and financial status
• I am not satisfied that you have sufficient funds, including income or assets, to carry out your stated purpose in going to Canada or to maintain yourself while in Canada and to effect your departure.
• You have not provided sufficient documentation to support your / your host's income and assets

We obviously did not enough research before submitting it as we thought it would be rather easy, especially since we were paying for everything.

As for travel history, he has none. He has never left the country so there is nothing to show there.

Family ties in country of residence, we just submitted his parents’ names as the forms asked for. What else can we show here?

For Personal assets and financial status, we submitted our bank statements for the last 3 months that should show that we have enough funds to pay for his stay. He would not be able to afford to come here on his own so submitting his bank records didn’t make much sense to us. We can submit our T4s if you think that will help?

We already bought his plane ticket (should have waited for the visa first we realize now) and submitted this as well as proof that he will be leaving two weeks later and the ticket is already paid for.

Any suggestions for getting a visa approved?

You made many huge mistakes. You need to do more research on this and reply.

From your description it seems that you would like him to come to Canada not only for biking but also for permanent staying.

Can you elaborate a bit on what huge mistakes we made?

What makes it seem like we want him to come to Canada to stay permanently?

He needs to provide quite a bit more to demonstrate proof of ties to his home country if he wants to have any chance of being approved. Having no previous travel history is certainly a barrier. Ideally he should show that he has funds to pay for his own trip. Can he show anything from a bank account perspective? Does he have any property he owns or rents that he can show as proof? Does he have an employer? Can he show regular pay? Can he obtain a letter from his employer giving him a leave of absence for this trip?

I think your finances are the least of his problems.

Wanted to provide an update on this. Our friend did get his visa on our second attempt.

This is what we did different on the second application:

1. We provided better financial records for us (as the sponsor)
2. We provided better financial records for our friend such as pay stubs
3. We provided a letter from his employer confirming he is employed
4. We wrote a 3 page letter addressing in detail all the concerns flagged in refusal of the first application
5. In this letter, we also included photos of our friend's life in Indonesia that showed his community involvement as further evidence that he has ties to his home country
