My younger brother just moved to Vancouver on PR this month, I'm planning to visit him and some of my friends in July of 2018. Is it possible for me to visit my brother this early or do I have to ask my friend to send an invitation letter stating that I would be staying with him during my visit.

IMO, it is better if your brother invites you. It could seem unusual if a friend invites you instead of your brother.

I would also recommend you wait for a few months before you apply

Thank you for your response,

I would like to add that I also work for this friend as a freelancer, is there some other way I can visit on some other visa? Also how long do you suggest that I wait if I have to wait for my brother's invite

Business meetings only
In that case, the invitation letter would be from your friend/customer.

You would be applying for a Business TRV for a well-defined, finite visit.

You would need to prove you have a business relationship to your Canadian host + a day-by-day itinerary of what you intend to do + hotel reservations and flight bookings (both provisional, not confirmed) + why you really need to visit versus why the same meetings cannot be done over the phone/emails

Basically, you would need to convince the visa officer that you will not work illegally when you visit + you have strong reasons to return to your home country. IMO, this could be somewhat challenging as you work as a freelancer/can work remotely because you don't have an established workplace.

You would need to work hard to prepare the paperwork: Family ties + property/land ownership + good financials + previous travel history, etc
