Hello,

My parents plan to come to the US where I live and from here we plan to take the Alaska cruise which will end in Vancouver. We plan to stay in Vancouver for 1-2 days and then come back to the US.

FUNDS:
If we are only staying in Canada for 1-2 days how much funds should be enough? My parents have:

- One Joint bank account with - CAD 1567

- Dad's Bank Account with - CAD 115 (this bank account has a lot of transactions though, with CAD 1000+ per transaction)
- Mom's Bank Account with - CAD 990

- Two Fixed Deposit for DAD total - CAD 6604
-One Fixed Deposit for Mom - CAD 1649

They additionally have National Savings certificates for both totalling CAD 8250.

Is it okay that they have a low Bank balance if they have FDs and NSC funds?

What number should I mention for "How much money do you have for your stay in Canada?" -

Only bank balance? eg: dad's form CAD 1682 (1567+115) and mom's form CAD 2557 (1567 +990)

OR FDs + Bank Balance eg: dad's form CAD 8286 (1567+115+6604) and mom's form CAD 4206 (1567 +990+1649)

OR FDs + Bank Balance + NSC

BUSINESS:

My parents own a clothing store which they both run. When filling the form I selected:

  • Work/Activity - Sales and service occupations
  • Job title - Retail salespersons
  • Company/employer - Name of store
  • Main duties of the job - Owner of a clothing store
Is this correct? Should the work/activity be "Business, finance and administration occupations"?

Have you looked into a transit visa as opposed to a Visitor visa? I don't know the procedure but probably not as complex as a visitor visa.

You need a transit visa if:

  • your international flight stops at a Canadian airport on its way to another country
  • you’ll be connecting between 2 international flights at a Canadian airport
  • you’ll transit through Canada in 48 hours or less, and
  • you don’t have a valid visitor visa

OP’s parents need a TRV. They are not transiting as they are leaving the airport and immigration. They are going on a cruise.

Visitor visa
You need a visitor visa if you’re from a visa-required country and you plan to:

  • visit Canada (even if you’re travelling by air and it’s for less than 48 hours)
  • stay in Canada more than 48 hours while transiting
You also need a visitor visa if you’re from a visa-required country and you’re crossing the border by:

  • bus
  • car
  • train
  • boat
  • cruise ship

OP, your parents cash is really low for TRV approval. They have only about $2k in cash which will not even cover 2 days in Vancouver, and they are using all their cash savings.Their only positive is that they have US visas so may be processed through CAN+.

Few follow up questions:

- how much money do you think would be sufficient? I thought $1000 for hotel, food and shopping is more than sufficient for a couple for 2days (it is in the US atleast)
- both mom and dads bank accounts have lot of credit and debit transactions because of their business, so I am guessing that the last reported account balance should not be considered as the final balance you have to spend right?
- And if they transfer a money to raise their account balance now, would that be considered fishy and cause for rejection?

And lastly, what is Can+ ?

$1000 is probably just enough for 2 days if everything goes perfectly but Canada typically wants to see that you can afford emergencies. What if you fall and break your arm while walking around Vancouver and need to go to the ER who makes them pay up front and then apply for reimbursement (hopefully they will have travel insurance), what if they get food poising or get Covid and are too sick to board their flight and have to book a few extra days in a hotel and maybe another flight. With their budget they can’t afford for anything unanticipated to happen

1. Where are you staying? $1k may just be enough and IRCC doesn’t want to see a person using all savings
2. They need to provide a bank statement of at least 3 months to show a consistent balance.
3. That is a huge red flag if funds are dumped in the account, and funds must be accounted for.

CAN+ is special expedited processing for people with valid US visas. IRCC decides if it will be processed through CAN+
