How & when to apply for extension of a visitor visa?
Is it through same IRCC portal through which the visitor visa was applied?

Bump.
Also Is it necessary to apply 1 month before expiry or 1 week is enough.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, can I apply visitor visa extension for my daughter who is 5 years old and in school now SK. Her visitor visa is expiring in next year September. Can i apply in advance? Because I need to go India for some personal reasons. I appreciate the response. Thank you.

I was seeking the same advice for my parents whose visitor visa is expiring in May and the general response I received was you can apply for a new one even now. There is no need to wait

Thank you for your response, it’s very helpful.

That is incorrect information. As a visitor you can’t apply for a new TRV from Canada it has to be processed abroad. You should really be applying for a study permit for your child.

Actually It’s not for me, I have to apply for my 5 year old daughter who is dependent on us. And I have visa till 2026.

that is incorrect. As a visitor they can’t apply for a TRV from Canada. They can attempt to extend their stay in Canada which is not the same as applying for a new TRV. TRVs are for visiting so there is an expectation that you would have to be abroad to want to visit Canada.

Yes you should be applying for a study permit for your child. We are seeing many children of temporary residents get their TRVs refused and be told to apply for a study permit if over age 4. Your child would also be given a longer stay that way that will expire at the same time as your permit.

Who can apply for a visitor visa from inside Canada
You can only apply for a visitor visa from inside Canada if you meet all of these criteria:

  • already are in Canada
  • hold a valid study or work permit
  • want to leave and return to Canada in the near future, and
  • have an existing visitor visa that’s expired, or is about to expire, or that was valid for only 1 entry
