Visitor Status for Principal Applicant of Spousal Sponsorship / Open Work Permit

Hi all,

I have scoured the guides regarding Spousal Sponsorship & Open Work Permit applications on CIC, and am seeking clarification, or anyone's personal experiences when applying whilst a visitor in Canada (which is a form of Temporary Resident Status, according to the definition).

Any information or advice is greatly appreciated, as I will soon be embarking on this most treacherous voyage to go live with my wife.

I applied PR and WOP in the same time while i was in Canada as TRV. Got WoP after 5months and PR still in process. I have been married with Canadian before i applied TRV to Canada

I'll be flying in soon too, are you from an eTA country?

The checklist says to provide proof of status in Canada, like a temporary resident visa, but if you have an eTA which is electronic, how do you provide physical proof in the application? My best guess is that they will check that I have an eTA once the see that I have a UK passport, but I can't find a definitive answer.

Also, did you have a return journey booked to your home country when you entered? The rules for entering as a visitor say that you need ties to your home country (something that will bring you back, like a job or family), but if someone is entering with the purpose of applying for spousal sponsorship / work permit, doesn't that mean they'd be planning on staying in Canada after their permit is approved?

Yes I don't have any proof of status. I added an additional sheet saying this as they didn't even stamp my passport on arrival this time. It's all computerised.

Yes have a return flight just in case. They didn't ask much. I discussed it in another thread I'll find a link to it.

I just recently submitted my PR and OWP application last September 16 via Canada Post and CIC received my documents on September 20. I'm also on visitor status but before we applied for the PR I have also submitted a visitor extension but they haven't processes it yet I think. I'm guessing after my visitor status expires I'll be on implied status.

I think you're right about the implied status, here's the link if you haven't read it already :

I'll be applying almost immediately after I arrive so hopefully I shouldn't need a visitor extension (assuming they give me 6 months!)

I applied for PR and OWP together after 6 months i arrived in Canada with TRV (but meanwhile i also applied for TRV extention) i got OWP 5months after completed docs received by CIC
