Can my boyfriend apply for a work permit during his visitor extension? We asked for a visitor extension because we are going for the common law sponsorship. The extension has been approved but he would like to work so we want to know if he can switch to a work permit? His visitor extension is for 1 year and on the cic website it says that having a temporary residency for more than six months is a valid reason for requesting a work permit. So if he applies for a work permit even though we are going to be applying for common law later on in the year how will applying for a work permit affect us? If the work permit gets denied will my boyfriend lose his visitor status and have to leave Canada? Or does he get to stay since he will have time left on his visitor status?

Any other information you can provide on visitors and work permits would be appreciated.

On what basis is he applying for a work permit? Does he have a job offer and approved LMIA?

He doesn't have a job offer or approved LMIA. We are only asking because he want's a work permit and we want to know how it will affect his current status and how it will affect us for when we apply for common law.

He can apply for a work permit if he qualifies. He would need a job offer and approved LMIA to qualify.

Note that you're misunderstood the rule regarding work permits. His temporary resident status in Canada does not entitle him to apply for a work permit. This rule only applies to those holding a temporary resident permit (this is different than a temporary resident visa). A TRP is a special class of permit that is granted to those who are otherwise inadmissible in Canada typically due to a crime. So unless he's inadmissible to Canada and is a TRP holder, he doesn't qualify.
