My partner is going to be applying online this year to extend his visitor status in Canada by 6 months, so that if accepted, we can be legally recognized as common law. That's our plan, anyway, but I also heard that if you're granted an extension that's longer than 6 months, you can apply for a work permit?

So my question is, for the "Indicate how long you plan to stay" field, I feel like our safest bet is to put 6 months from the date that his initial visitor status expires, but I also think it would be beneficial if he could apply for a work permit sooner (and it would also give us a little bit of buffer time to apply for sponsorship once we are common law). Will setting dates in this question to a range of 7 or 8 months make it more likely that his visitor extension application gets rejected altogether? Or could IRCC just tell us he can't extend it that long at once and just approve it for 6 months, or something? Is it risky to try and extend for longer than 6 months at a time?

Thanks for any help!
