hello I'm currently extending my current visitor status in Canada as a visitor to meet common law requirements with my girlfriend. In my explanation letter I was going to explain how I am also attending a Canadian college in January 2017 to become a skilled worker. (Welder). If I include this in my extension explanation letter will that give me more of a chance of being approved? Or should I not explain that I'm going to school here in January. I don't want to give more information then they need

So you already in Canada and have an approved study permit for your course in Jan 2018 ?
Not yet. I haven't applied for it yet. I read on Cic website that I can receive a study permit from within Canada if I hold a temporary resident permit valid for six months or more. I would like to extend my temporary residence to meet common law with my girlfriend and then apply for my study permit. I wasn't sure if they would take into consideration that skilled trade workers are very much needed in Canada at the moment so maybe they would want to keep me here because of the profession I will be studying in January?

You don't have and can't get a Temporary Resident Permit. It is a special permit granted to otherwise inadmissible people who have a compelling reason to travel to Canada.

There is no point in mentioning this in your visitor extension app.

Note that as an American, you have the option of applying for a study permit at a Port of Entry.

How I should've worded it is, I wish to extend my stay as a visitor to meet the common law requirements and then attend school after my tuition is paid for.
