My mother recently got her multiple entry visa for 2 years and would be visiting here next month. I know on a TRV one is only allowed to stay for 6 months.

But if she visits the US in between say for a week, would that reset her timer and will be granted another 6 months when she comes back to Canada, or will she have to go back to her home country?

1. Not necessarily, it is quite possible that she would only be re-admitted to the date of the expiry of her original entry. If she wants to stay longer, then apply for an extension of her visitor status to Vegreville.

Thanks PMM,

That makes sense, but a slight modification to the situation, what if she leaves for the US in the 5th month and comes back after the expiry of her original entry into Canada. Do you think that would create any problem or re-entry issues? I'm not looking to make her do a trip around the flagpole as she genuinely has to go to the US for a week or two in June (for which she will take a flight and not drive there).

Sorry for picking your brain, but I'm looking for a way to save on money by not having my mother fly back half way around the world just to make an exit.

Thanks again for your response.

On her re-entry it is up to the office to decide on the length of the visit. With a mother visiting her children, she will probably be re-admitted for 6 months. It also depends on her normal country of residence whether she requires a medical, as the stay will be longer than 6 months, if she didn't have a medical (if required) when she got her TRV. So if a medical is required, she will probably only get a short admission until she submits proof of the medical, if, again she hasn't had one, and comes from a country where you require one.
