Hi -
I am new to the forum so appreciate the help in advance. I have a somewhat unique situation that I couldn't find a clear answer to, so am hoping to get some guidance from the collective knowledge on this forum.
Two background key facts:
1. I am a newly minted U.S. green card holder this year, and am living in the U.S.
2. I used to have Canadian PR status because my parents migrated to Canada when I was under 18. They applied on my behalf, and I received it, but I chose to pursue my career and education in the U.S. Consequently, I did not fulfill my physical presence test and my PR card expired in January 2009 (3.5 years ago). I visited Canada a few times during my residency but my last visit was in 2007. In 2008, I lost my PR card on a plane, and don't have any copies of the card, but I didn't notify the embassy because I wasn't planning on renewing my status.
I am planning on visiting Canada in a few months to visit my parents. As I am coming on a green card, I am not required to apply for a visa to enter Canada. My questions are:
1. As this is my first time coming on a green card, but my passport is still the same, should I be concerned about any potential issues arising with my lapsed PR status?
2. Do you think I should try to make an appointment at the Canadian consulate in the U.S. ahead of time and see if I can officially 'cancel' my PR status in their system. I'm not even sure on what basis they would let me make an appointment since I can't produce a copy of the card (although I do have my landing papers).
Apologies if this post is in the wrong section, wasn't sure where to put it. But any advice, suggestions, or sharing of similar experiences would be immensely helpful. Thank you!
