Hello

My in laws were visiting from India and my father in law had medical emergency last week. They did not had medical insurance, which we think was a mistake. At this time we don’t want to lament of this since it’s already passed.

We are sitting on 60,000 cad bill right now. Can someone of you please help in this situation? We do intent to pay if it’s little manageable expense around 20K for example.

Any advice/ work around will be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

You'll need to speak with the hospital directly and try to negotiate with them. I'm not sure you'll be able to get the overall bill lowered - but you should be able to make arrangements to pay the bill off in installments.

So the Canadian taxpayers would be on the hook for the other $40000?

Pay the bill.

Thanks for your answer. Do you think I should hire an attorney/agency who can better handle it? Also I forgot to mention that the financial documents were signed by the mother in law NOT us. The address on the financial form is of India again. There might be our Canada address on other form. We will get the copy of the bill to get the address of it.

I speak with the hospital yourself. Expect the hospital to come after you for the payments.

So you'll spend money on a lawyer, but not on the hospital bill......nice. Remember, it's the government that you/your in-laws owe the money to, not the hospital.

Just pay it, have you inlaws pitch in. And more importantly have everyone who visits you get a proper travel insurance

@shortd, @hamgha Hey, how did you manage this situation? I’m in the same boat but in my case we had travel insurance of 100k but the hospital bill exceeds $300k.
How did you manage the bill?

Would also mention that this was likely an extended stay with probably surgery. I hope your family member is doing well but I am sure at some point the hospital approached your family wanting to know how you would be paying for the fees.
