visiting canada with one way ticket

Hi All,

My mother has visited Canada twice and if my memory serves me well we purchased a return ticket for her on both occasions. We are planning for her to visit again but now with a one-way ticket. Anybody has any idea if she will be allowed to enter Canada without a return ticket - we plan to purchase her return ticket after her arrival.

Depends if she holds a TRV or super visa. If she holds a super visa, a one way ticket is fine. If the holds a regular TRV, a one way ticket will likely be a problem. High chance the airline will refused her boarding when she tries to fly to Canada.

I 100% agree what Scylla mentioned, that airlines will not allow her to board from the home airport if she is visiting on a TRV.

Why not check with the airlines to keep her return ticket open or flexible without having to incur charges if you all decide to change her date of return trip.

In that case it's almost guaranteed she is going to have problems boarding the flight. If she manages to board the flight, this could cause issues when she enters Canada. Very strongly recommend that you buy a return flight now.

Agreed. From personal experiences, the airline will most probably refuse her boarding without proof she has onward travel arrangements.

My parents arrived on a TRV today. They were asked about their intended date of return but neither the airline nor immigration asked to see a return ticket. However, they did have an onward one-way ticket to the US for September.
So, in my case, the airline ticket on which they flew into Toronto was essentially a one-way ticket and the airline staff did not bother.

Was the onward ticket to the US with the same airline?

The ticket to the US would count as proof if onward travel from Canada. As long as you have something indicating you have onward travel out of Canada, there isn’t a problem.
