My Japanese wife is currently working in Canada with a Working Holiday Visa. I've applied for an open work permit so that I can join my wife. I want to visit my wife while the open work permit is still being processed. According to what I've read, there shouldn't be any problems visiting Canada while I wait for the work permit. However, I worry about crossing the border. I've went into Canada once before about 4 months ago and the American security was not nice to me at all. At that time my wife was not working in Canada yet, so I didn't have a "good" reason to be visiting Canada. I was sightseeing in Toronto. They were not satisfied with that answer, and then they kind of grudgingly let me through after asking me if I had any drugs and thoroughly searching my car. I'd rather not go through that experience again. I'm assuming if I tell them I am visiting my wife, and I have her address and contact info, they should be more congenial.
It seems everybody has different advice on how to deal with immigration at the border. Somebody told me not to mention my wife at all. Why not? That doesn't make sense to me. Isn't visiting my wife a perfectly good reason to go to Canada? Surely it's a better reason than sightseeing. Any input would be appreciated.
