Visit Visa after PR Expiration

Hi Guys,

I had Canadian PR card but I didn't move to Canada and my PR expired this June. I am doing my Masters from one of the Canadian universities and I need to attend a summer conference in Canada. Am I eligible to apply for the visit visa as my PR card is expired but not the residence status
If in case I have to cancel my status first, can you please tell me the steps I need to take?

To renounce see here as obviously you cannot as you have gathered have a visit visa and be a PR at the same time. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/voluntarily-renounce.asp

Is there any other way to go to Canada without cancellation of PR?
