Hello,
Anyone applied for visit visa after their PR card expiry? The PR card expired a year ago and want to travel for a business visit to Canada. I am assuming I cannot apply for PRTD but the below confuses me.

Losing your permanent resident status does not happen automatically.

There may come a time when you no longer want to be a permanent resident of Canada. If so, you can apply to voluntarily give up (renounce) your permanent resident status.

For example, if you:

  • know you have not met your residency obligations by being outside of Canada for a long period of time, and
  • would like to visit Canada, and
  • do not want to wait for a visa officer to do a formal assessment of your permanent resident status
OR

  • would like to avoid processing delays at the Port of Entry

Thanks

The real question is whether you are compliant with your residency obligation (two years of last five in Canada, basically); and, if not, whether you wish to retain your PR status or not.

If you're compliant with the residency obligation, there's not really a significant risk in applying for a PRTD.

If you've no desire to remain a PR, yes, you can renounce it and apply for a visitor visa.

In between those two it gets a bit complicated with a lot more words.

How long have you been out of Canada and what do hyou want?

I have no other ties other than my son being Canadian and I travel for business visits and meeting friends.

This doesn't answer either question, really. Are you in compliance with RO (and if not, how much out of compliance)? How long out of Canada?

Do you want to retain PR status or not?

(Note that renouncing is permanent; you could apply again, but would have no particular advantage in doing so because you were once a PR).

You can't apply for a visitor visa while you are technically still a PR. You would need to officially renounce your PR status first before you can apply for a visitor visa.
