Visa 'This does not Authorize Re-entry'

I am a British citizen and I was lucky enough to get a temporary work permit for working in BC Canada until end 2016.

I was planning on heading down to Seattle in the US for a weekend at the end of March for a fan convention, but I am unsure if I am actually allowed to do this?

Also my temporary work permit has 'This does not Authorize Re-entry' on it, does that mean I need to do anything to leave and then return from Seattle, plus if I go back to visit England at the end of the year will I have trouble returning?

I am not sure where to start looking for this information. So any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Lucy

My understanding is that the work permit states that because on its own it doesn't qualify you to enter the country.

As well as a work permit you need a temporary resident/visitor visa to enter Canada. Since you are a British citizen you are exempt from this step so you'll be fine to re-enter Canada.

We had no problem going in and out of states with our work permit when we were there and we are TRv exempt.

This is what it says under IEC work permits which are just open work permits so would assume the same applies for closed work permits with a LMIA

Note: The work permit will also state “This does not authorize re-entry.” This means the permit allows you to work in Canada after you have been legally admitted as a temporary resident. If you leave Canada during the period of your work permit and return to continue working, the CBSA Officer will re-assess your admissibility as a temporary resident. If you remain admissible, the CBSA Officer will authorize you to re-enter Canada with your original work permit. The work permit does not act as a visa or passport to allow you entry to Canada, nor does it guarantee admittance.

A PR or citizen in Canada cannot be denied a reentry unless on criminal grounds.

This does not apply to work permit holders or students. You do not have a right to reenter. But in practice it only means that upon returning you need to have valid visa to enter Canada unless you are from a visa exempt country or if you have a work permit, it should be valid.

Say your work permit expired and you tried entering border telling i am going to work. They would probably not let you in

Excellent, thank you so much.

This is what I had assumed, I will take proof of funds etc...with me in case it is required like with normal entry into Canada.

Thanks again. :D
