My partner has been asked to care for his nephew (grade 9 student) next year. He is an American.

His mother would be happy to sign temporary custody to us and we are happy to provide for him and have him live with us for the year.

However, I am not sure if it is possible for us to get him a student VISA here in Toronto to attend public school at our local district? We have been living here, working, paying taxes, etc for awhile and have no children of our own.

Does anyone have experience getting a student visa for international students in secondary school?

Thanks!

Sure - he can certainly apply for a study permit.

Hopefully you're aware that it will cost around $14K per year for him to attend public school as a foreign student.

Wow, I didn't realize this.

I just assumed if we had our own child, or we had custody of one, it would be the same thing.

I guess that wasn't as reasonable as it first seemed... :-(

No - unfortunately it's not the same thing at all.

Since he's from the US, I think getting the study permit will be relatively easy. However you will have to be willing to pay the tuition fee.
