I also think it is the case, at least it does make sense.
Though rules before (several years ago) didn't specify that, or at least if wasn't specified clearly.
So I did go to US from Canada, and then visited other countries, would come back to US, and then would enter canada
by car with just a work permit.
And I would say at the border where I had been. It was never a problem in my experience, but I always though it is kind of silly, to allow
entrance only from US, almost like saying, if you did enter US, you are ok to enter Canada (provided you have a reason, i.e. work permit or a study permit).
but yeah, I would recommend getting a TRV for occasions when you plan to go beyond US.

Hi,

Yes you can re enter with just a valid WP only from US. But if you go on Cruise from US and want to come back from US , then you are not allowed.
You can come back as long as you did not travel to any other country from US.

I have done this many times (expired visa / Valid WP) and no problems.

The best thing to do is , call CIC and ask them. They are very helpful. I ask hem to send me a email with details.
They send a detailed email which you can keep as a printout

Hope this helps.

good luck

Thanks

hi,

This is a very interesting and useful thread for me. Guys if you could help me please i would appreciate. Was the valid working permit mentioned in this topic i assumed a permit that you already have or one that you possesed right? my question is what if the work permit is the very first work permit that you will have from being a visitor. You dont have it yet in your hand but you have a letter stating that you can get your work permit at the border. so doing the flagpole thing with only the letter of approved work permit and with an expired trv. is it the same? as re-entering canada without a valid trv and a valid work permit?

by the way the trv got expired while waiting for the processing of the work permit which is taking forever..

It depends on your citizenship; if you require a visa to visit Canada as a tourist you can't reenter without a visa, but if you are from a country that doesn't require a tourist visa you can reenter with just your work permit.

Wrong, PMM already posted the right answer on page 1 of the thread. Even if you're from a country that requires visas, as long as your study or work permit is still valid, you're allowed back in from the US as long as you only travelled to the continental US or St. Pierre and Miquelon. This applies if your have a single entry trv that you already used, or if your original trv has expired.

Cautionary tale: Here's what happens when people travel to other countries and try to avoid getting a TRV by entering via the US http://www.vancouverdesi.com/news/surrey-trucker-is-a-model-immigrant-but-now-hes-trapped-in-tacoma/518554/

If a person is holding a valid work permit and wants to change employer does he need to go to the border to have passport stamp again or no need for stamp? But can go to border for the option of getting work permit faster than sending it to main offices?

Interesting thread.

I think Canadian Border control made a mistake with me then. I have a Open Work Permit and traveled back and forth to the states last year about 10 times. No problem.

I also went to Iceland and the UK and returned directly to Canada. I only have the OWP - not visa or TRV. Whoops. But they didnt question me at all and just let me through!

Going to the states is no problem indeed,
Iceland and UK is another story. Did you return from Iceland and/or UK directly to Canada or through the US?

Are you from a visa exempt country? If you are, you don't require a TRV to re-enter Canada.

I am from Australia...

My flight was from London UK to Vancouver direct.

That explains why you did not require a TRV to re-enter Canada. The canadian border officials made no mistake :)

I understand that no TRV needed if you are just going to the US coming back to Canada holding a valid work permit. my question is, does it hold true even if on every work permit it states "This does not authorize re-entry? Can you enlighten me please especially those who have experienced this? Thanks a lot...

Can I travel to U.S Virgin Island, or Puerto Rico, or Hawaii and return Canada with work permit only (TRV expired)?
