If you have a US Passport and entering Canada by Road, is may be all right just to show the passport for you to enter as thousands of US residents enter Canada everyday by Border crossings. If you have a passport from a 3rd country which also has visa exempt status with Canada, then I don't know what may happen.
I guess, if you had to show the PR card anyway, it will depend how short are you of fulfilling the 730 days in order for the agent to let you in.
