Hi. I am an international PhD student in Quebec. I have completed 1 year of study and 3 more years to go for completion of program.

I want to apply for my spouse's visa. Please guide under which category we have to apply for her visa- visitor or dependent? Will she get work permit immediately after landing in Quebec in both the cases?

Hi,

To enter Canada, your spouse will need a "TRV Visitor".

Any accompanying dependent family member to Canada must complete and sign their own ‘Application for Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada' [IMM5257]. In other words, if a student is applying for a study permit, he/she will submit an application [IMM5257] for a study permit and his/her spouse who is/will be accompanying him/her will submit a separate application [IMM5257] for a temporary resident visa.

Your spouse should first apply for the TRV from your homeland and then apply for the OWP (open work permit) once your spouse lands in Canada.

Application: www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visa.asp

Once in Canada, Your spouse will be eligible for an open work permit (allowing him/her to work full time in any job/any sector/anywhere in Canada), where the open work permit will be valid for the same period of time as your study permit.

Once, you have completed 2 years of study toward a PhD, you (and hence automatically your spouse) will be eligible to apply for PR (Permanent residency) under federal PhD stream. Only 1000 applications/Annum are accepted and CIC starts accepting applications from 1st of Nov. every year.

Best of Luck.

Thank you very much for the help. Please also tell me what are the chances of getting TRV for my wife? Should we write the purpose of visit as 'Visit spouse' in application form? And how much fund we should show in bank account?

Hello, my husband got the offer letter for his PhD from university of Windsor. I am going to apply for visit visa with him so that we can go to Canada together. What are my chances of getting the visa? What are the necessary papers I need to submit?
