Visa application in process: need passport to travel

Hi Everyone

I applied to the Seattle Consulate General for a TRV on Aug 9 earlier this month using my Indian passport to attend a conference in Toronto between 19th and 23rd Sep.
I just found out I need to go to Zurich next week for work but the Consulate General still has my passport

I was wondering
1. Is there a way to get them to send me my passport back? I will try and apply for the TRV again in Germany (Switzerland has no consulate)
2. If I go to Seattle in person, will they be able to give me my passport back and process me quicker?
