Hi everyone, I'm an international student living in Ontario. My program finishes at the end of this year, specifically Dec 20th and my study permit and my wife's work permit both expire December 31st, they gave us such short length after graduation because of my passport expiring in December of this year. I was told by the agent at the airport I had to renew my passport and extend my study permit and my wife's work permit to have more time to apply for PGWP after graduation. I renewed my passport already, and we are ready to make the permit extension, but we also noticed that our visas (the ones stamped on our passports) expire in September, so we are a little confused why the different dates and how to extend both our visas and permits since we have plans to travel soon, and we want to avoid problems when re-entering Canada. Thanks in advance for your help.

You’ll need to apply for a study permit extension. Would explain that you need an extension last the graduation date to apply for PGWP and ensure you have proof of graduation documents. WP extension for your spouse that corresponds to your study permit extension so you can both apply together for PGWP and an OWP after graduation. You both also need to apply for new TRVs. Processing times can take a while so it is good that you are applying now. When are you travelling and for how long? If travelling soon would probably suggest delaying TRV application until you return.

Thank you kindly for your reply Canuck78,
We will do that, extend our study and work permits in time to have the necessary validity time to apply for PGWP and OWP after graduation.

Regarding TRVs and our travel, we plan to travel and return in April this year as the visas are valid until September.

Once back in Canada as you mentioned we could renew the visas as we would have no further travel plans and the process would not be interrupted.

The confusion now is, what happens if we do not renew the TRVs but only the permits and after applying for the PGWP (next year) we apply for the TRVs? Would it be dangerous to be in Canada with an expired TRV?

Regarding to the TRV, I believed its required when you are trying to re-entry to Canada.
Which mean, if you are kept staying in Canada with validate visa, it wont affect you at all.
However, even if your visa is validate, if TRV is expired, then you may cannot re-enter to Canada.
I have a lots of collogue who live in here without TRV (but validate study permit visa).
So if you want to go outside Canada, then definitely you have to applying for it.

Just to clarify, permit and visa are two different things.

TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) such as S1 or W1 are the counterfoil stamped on the passport. This allows the bearer entry to Canada within the validity date.

Permits, such as Student or Work permits are documents that allows the bearer to remain in Canada within the validity date. Permits are usually issued at PoE. If renewed inland, the new permit is mailed to the applicant.

But 100% agree with your explanation.

My student work permit was expiring on 4th Feb and I applied for a PGWP on 29th Jan and I got a Job as a Media Analyst on 30th Jan. After getting my 3 pay slips I raised a web form stating that I have a job and submitted my job offer letter along with 3 pay stubs. Also, my spouse applied with me simultaneously on 29th Jan. Anyone has been in a similar situation or has any idea what happens in this...I am still on Implied status and waiting for my PGWP.
