Venezuelan wife asked to renew passport

Hoping you can help with this. I have applied to CIC to sponsor my Venezuelan wife. After she completed the medical CIC sent a letter asking her to renew her passport which still has 10 months left. We sent a letter back explaining Venezuelans have great difficulty getting new passports and certainly not when there are still 10 months left of validity. Has anyone heard about anything like this?

When did you apply?

The COPR will expire along with her passport, so it's likely they are trying to avoid you having an extremely quick/unrealistic turnaround for the timing of her landing after the COPR is issued.

Yes - I guess that makes sense. We began the process mid April. The first part went very fast but now we don't know if the application will stall until her passport has less than six months left. Even then, it could take a year or more to get a new passport or at least many months to get the Venezuelan 2 year extension

One more question KBH - does her passport definitely have to have at least 6 months left on it in order for her to be able to enter Canada with her COPR?

I suggest you to work on her passport extension/renewal as soon as possible. Before CIC issues COPR to your wife, they would ask her passport to send to them for VISA stamp, one of the requirement is that the PA's passport is still valid for a minimum 6 months. And it depends on the local VOs, some local VOs will ask for the PA's passport is valid for 12 months. If you don't comply, either CIC may refuse your application or delay your application till you submit whatever they ask for.

I wish we could work on the extension/renewal but the Venezuelan government won't accept any requests for renewing passports that still have more than 6 months left. It's a no win situation because we can't even start to do anything for 5 months from now

Then, if CIC is asking the new passport, you can provide them an explanation letter, they will understand it. But you need to expect some delay on your application.

Yes, we sent an explanation letter about 10 days ago but haven't had a response or an update to the status on their website since then. Hopefully we will hear soon and they'll understand...

CIC may or may not send you another response regarding this issue. If they didn't and also you didn't receive a Procedure Fairness Letter on the same issue, then you can consider it as CIC had received and accepted your explanation. But the safest way is to call them to make sure that all is good.

As of today still waiting for the two year passport extension. Other people’s ID numbers have bee “tweeted”,for approval but not ours. Nightmare
Omg but where she ask her extension? I did in Peru and it was relatively fast. I asked it in September and in October I got it. The thing it's only for two years. Anyway I saw today a news that said that Canada government will accept like a affidavit letter instead or passport because of the current situation with passports in Venezuela, still don't know if this will affect to the Venezuelans who are outside Canada

Thanks for the info and the link. Unfortunately she is in Santiago Chile but was not eligible to apply for the extension until mid December 2018 which is of course when everything in Venezuela went into more chaos

What happen with the passport extension? CIC received my wife medical results on January 12, 2019. My wife passport expires in April 2020.

I'm a little worry about this because our application status been in "process" since January 12, 2019. Been 3 months now and they didn't tell us to do passport extension or anything.
