Vancouver vs Toronto

Hi Guys,

Myself and wife are trying to figure out our destination in Canada once we receive PR. We are looking at both Vancouver (Surrey) and Toronto.

These are my finding in key areas of concern.

1. Weather condition - Too cold Totonto vs Rainy Vanc' - Never been such cold environment like Toronto. So, little hesitant on that. But I believe once you pass year or so, that should be familiar.

2. Cost of living - Expensive Vanc'. So, Toronto is better as per my findings. Low house price, groceries, etc.

3. Job market for accountants/finance managers - It seems Toronto is better based on the job opportunities available in the internet

4. Long-term view - Vanc' might have a much relaxed long-term life including we become much older and much greener environment.

So, we are yet to conclude on the area.

what is your experience and advice to us on this.

I have one kid who is 4 years old.

I myself is deciding on it below are couple of things

- Weather is ALWAYS a secondary factor not primary. Just to give you rough idea.. Ontario has approx. 1,000,000 south Asians and BC has approx 300,000 as per the census.
- Toronto isn't like New York but for reference and comparison we can say toronto is NYC of Canada.
- Now that we have established that weather is secondary, it comes down to your work. You need to check which area has more work opportunity in your field.
- Personally I would prefer snow then 6-8 month of cloudy weather.
- Snow has it's own disadvantages but its not bad at all. this is based on my experience of 7 years staying in New Jersey. Plus your kid won't be able to enjoy snowman if you shift to BC.


- I am considering Vancouver only because in future my wife wants to open her own Salon and snowy season can't be good for walk in retails. but Toronto is more happening on the other hand BC is full of natural beauty.

- You may want to check out Calgary too but please note it has harsher winter than Ontario.

I have lived in some most expensive cities in the world such as NYC, Hong Kong and Van. And I have to say, among these cities, cost-income ratio in Van is the worst.

As I researched, Finance jobs are higher in Toronto.

Yeah. It seems like one of the expensive cities and we might not have any saving end of the day.
