Validity of Permanent Travel Document

Hi Fellas,

I need some information regarding the validity of Permanent Resident Travel Document. I need to apply for PRTD by this week.
What is the validity of PRTD? I haven't still booked my tickets to Canada , as i don't have any fixed dates in my mind but mostly it will be somewhat between 15 Feb - 5 Mar 2016. The PRTD takes 10 days to process at my place, so is it better to book tickets first and then apply or can i book afterwards.
My preference will be to get PRTD first and then book my tickets.
Any pointers or information will be highly appreciated.
