Hi everyone,

I would like to share something that happened to me last weekend. Maybe you can share your input, experience, and/or advice.

I validated my PR after landing at the Edmonton International airport last Sunday. Everything went very well and smoothly. No questions or additional documentation were asked.
I live in Edmonton so I provided my address. Now I have to wait for the PR card (so far so good).

What surprised me was that the Immigration officer ripped my work permit (valid until March) because my validated COPR should suffice.
Since I'm going on vacations abroad in 2 weeks, I mentioned to him my situation. I asked him what I was supposed to use to re-enter Canada. He told me that the piece of paper (validated COPR) is fine.... Now I'm wondering... really??? So what about the BOWP, or travel document, and so on, that we should use to re-enter Canada until we get the plastic PR card...I asked him twice, he answered the same thing.

I have an Italian passport so the only explanation that I find it's because I don't need a visa to enter...(?)

Anyways... any information you would like to share regarding this will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Congrats on activating your PR.

You can still travel when you do not have a PR card. If you want to return to Canada you need either a PR card or a travel document issued my a Canadian consulate/embassy in the country you are in. You are perfectly fine. You could get this travel document by telling them that you need to go back to Canada but you haven't got your PR card yet!

Good luck!

Right...

But i guess that officer gave him an unnecessary hassle of going to an Canadian embassy (wherever S/he is) to collect this so called 'travel document' every time S/he needs to travel to enter Canada.
I mean...If he had not torn that WP...S/he could have easily used that to enter w/o the hassle of explaining the whole PR story (not yet getting the card etc...)

Exactly!! I'm actually going on a family vacation for one week only and to the Caribbean! Haven't seen my family for more than one year.. How am I supposed to travel up to the Embassy, which is far by the way, and only for the week that I'm there... It's ridiculous!

The moment that you become a PR, all visas and permits are automatically voided. The officer was correct to invalidate them. You will need to obtain a PR Travel Document, cross the USA land border or, for a short time, you can use the visa-exempt passport.

Ok, sounds fair.. I guess I will choose to use my Italian passport + validated COPR then. Italian passports are visa-exempt until March 15th :)

Thank you all!

I asked a similar question earlier.

We're hoping to get our COPR by May/June but travelling to New York in July. My husbands work permit and our connected visitors permits will become invalid once we confirm our PR. How long do you have to validate your PR once you get COPR? We're thinking about validating it on our return from NY as was told you can't land in Canada via air with just your COPR once you've validated.

When you land, you might be asked for POF! It is always recommended to carry a latest statement/letter from the bank!!

After you are issued visa/COPR, you must land before your medicals expire.

The "use by" date is variable based on factors in the individual application. It's noted on the COPR and in the covering letter.

Medicals are valid for a year, is that right? Which means we'll have til October then as passport not due to expire for another 6 years.

Hello all,

I have landed on 10-DEC-2018 at IRCC-Montreal. At that time, the immigration officer took away my Work Permit (Valid till April-2020). Still, I have a counterfoil related to that work permit (valid till April-2020, Multiple Entry). According to the cic.gc.ca my that counterfoil is valid.

My question is before receiving my PR Card, can I enter into Canada with that counterfoil?

By Air, PR travel doc or PR card is a must to enter Canada.
