Valid PR card but expired passport when re-entering Canada after traveling

My husband has valid PR status but an expired passport. He’s traveling back to the UK for a family emergency and got an emergency travel document to do so however I’m worried about his reentry into Canada. Will he be allowed reentry with an expired passport? Will his emergency travel document be sufficient? Should he try and get a new passport in UK before returning?

What does the emergency travel document allow? Normally they are either for a single journey or for a return trip. The concern you should have is not about being allowed to re-enter Canada but about being allowed to board the flight back to Canada. He must hold the required documents to be allowed to board the flight.

So his emergency travel document is for return travel so he should be able to board the airplane. I was concerned with the conditions of the PR card whether you need a valid passport in order for the pr card to be valid?

PR card validity is independent of passport validity.

Thanks do you know how I would know if the airlines will accept the uk emergency travel document for the return to Canada? It was issued as a return but now I’m questioning whether the airlines accept this as a replacement for a passport as we never asked about boarding the plane only about border control. How would I find this out?‍
