Hi All,

Really appreciate your input in the following:

I have a valid work permit and a valid visa good till 2017. When I requested both, I had a valid passport that expired beyond 2017. Now the problem is…that passport was a non-machine readable passport, and I was contacted by my embassy to update my passport (to a machine readable one), as a result I recently changed my passport. Now, I know I can still carry my old passport with the visa on it, and that does not pose any problem, however, I noticed that my open work permit has a field that specifies my passport number, in this case, the old one…. does this mean I have to request for an amendment on my work permit? I still have both my old and my new with me…and my personal information on both is the same (no change in name and that sort of things…), however, the passport number in my work permit does not any more match my current valid passport.
Any thoughts?

It is urgent because I am planning a 1-week trip this Christmas and I will be exiting an re-entering Canada, and I don’t want to run into trouble (I know that the document required to enter the border is the visa, not the work permit, however in my experience every single time I enter they ask me for my work permit as well).

Thank you again for your input.

Hi echebergajo,
Were you able to get the changes done in your work permit? I am in a similar situation, except that my new passport number has been entered physically by the immigration officer. Service canada rep, (the people who change the SIN status once you get your work permit) says that they cannot accept the work permit that has a change made by someone physically i.e. using pen and therefore, i want to know if open work permits can be amended using the same process i.e. filling form and sending it with other docs.
