Glad you asked, should have been more clear that it's really more theoretical than a practical issue, it just makes a temporary exit more risky (if you aren't working any more, even if you have a valid work permit, if you leave and try to return you *could* be refused entry. ). I don't know how they would check if you were in Canada or not, but I would think of it like being on "implied status," which you lose the second you cross the border... If you fly, your passport is swiped; if you drive, your passport is swiped and licence plates photographed, at least when entering the US. If you are on unpaid leave, you are not on vacation and you are not working. This is the real problem.
