US resident PR in process with valid Visitor record can travel to Mexico?

Hello,
My husband is a US citizen living with me in Canada and has a visitor record valid until Dec 2018. We also have a Sponsorship application in process (As of June 2016).
Can my husband and I travel to Mexico and have him return? Or will this guarantee he gets stuck, or denied the flight?
Any answers would be great. We have been married a year (on Jan 23) and want to go on a honeymoon...
 
Whether he is allowed back into Canada is always up to the CBSA officer you encounter at the border. Since he's American, chances are extremely high he'll have no issues re-entering. But it's not guaranteed.
