I only now realized that there was a difference between ECAS and MyCIC -- myCIC is much more informative!

It now says "Review in Progress" on my wife's eligibility, her medical is "passed". Good?

Summary of Experience Completing a Family Sponsorship without Legal Assistance

With my CoPR in the mail, my husband and I were discussing our relief and excitement. The conversation turned to numbers…hours, dollars, months. We chose to complete the application without legal assistance, having faith in ourselves and the system. Looking back, I can say a lawyer would’ve saved us the stress of looking for answers to our MANY questions but not saved me much of the work in compiling the materials. Here’s a summary of our experience that might be relevant for anyone planning to submit an application without legal assistance.

I’m a U.S. citizen married to a Canadian citizen. At the time of application, we’d been together for just about 2 years, married for 7 months. I was living in Canada with an extended visitor visa. There weren’t any red flags as far as I could tell. We had an initial consultation with a lawyer who ultimately told us we’d be fine on our own and didn’t need to waste our money on her. (Hey look, an honest lawyer…) I was able to dedicate significant time to determining which forms were needed, pulling together all of the materials, gathering necessary documents and copying where applicable, copying photos into a Word document, and completing the myriad other little pieces of the puzzle. The biggest concern by far was which forms, which questions, which versions. Oh my goodness! In addition, how much information was necessary? Too little and they may not believe the validity, too much and the VO may be overwhelmed or suspicious. We soldiered through with the help of many Google searches…and this forum.

Lessons learned? We ended up having the medical done twice because we got ahead of ourselves and the first one expired. We paid the Right of Permanent Residency fee midway through the process, which could have set us back by weeks instead of a few days. We took longer than necessary to submit simply because we second-guessed ourselves. Biggest lesson? It was worth every single minute. ;)

Time preparing application 6 months
Approximate hours 200 hours
Approximate number of pages 400
Weight of binder at shipping 4.5 lbs

Total cost $2508.00
broken out:
Visitor extension fee ($100, $100) $200.00
Legal consultation $300.00
Notaries for affidavits $270.00
Medical $388.00
Paper, copies, miscellaneous supplies $200.00
Police clearance $75.00
PR application fees ($475, $75, $490) $1,040.00
Shipping $35.00

I split the submission into two primary sections, Sponsor and Principal Applicant, allowing the application to be easily handled as two different approval steps. I had a master Table of Contents (Toc) at the front, to allow someone to see it all at one glance, and a separate ToC for each section. I created tabs for every form and every separate type of information. From there I tried my best to only duplicate where necessary, to avoid a massive amount of paper. I occasionally made reference to “See Tab XX in Section XX” to be cautious when it seemed as if the information might be relevant. After printing the pages with photos in chronological order, I wrote a description for each photo, drawing lines when needed to specify people or places. For additional pages being added to forms, I made note within the Toc as well as inserted a header on the page indicating the form to which it applied. Again, I tried to make it as easy as possible to navigate. (Side note: I'm a copy editor by profession.)

I hope this helps at least one person feel a little less stressed when looking for help. I'm happy to answer any questions or go into more detail where possible.

This would have been supremely helpful when I was submitting. And I'll say the most stressful part for me was also finding the correct forms, making sure I had all of them, and making sure I had the correct versions. And then of course gathering so much documentation takes a lot of time and organization.

By the way, I still haven't received an email about my approval. I'm hoping it comes through tomorrow, after the holiday. Hoping to get that CoPR in hand soon!

2 questions for anyone:
1) Does my partner have to come with me for the landing process? Because I may take advantage of him being on a business trip to use his car and drive myself to the border. (That way he doesn't have to take off work for the drive).

2) Is it only the main border crossings that do landings? My father in law mentioned there would be a CBSA office in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia because of the ferry that goes to the US from there. I'll call tomorrow and see if it's a possibility (it's MUCH closer to me than Woodstock/Calais) but if anyone here knows, that would be great.

MY QUESTION: What documents will my wife need when she visits me this week?

She is a visitor, she is not landing. We want to prove that we are in this process, so she will print out the following documents (please tell me if I should consider any more):

  • Receipt of payment ($1040.00 CAD) to CIC
  • Acknowledgement of receipt from CIC via email
  • Decision Made email, regarding me as a sponsor (has UCI/App #)
  • ECAS page from sponsor (has full address of sponsor)
  • MyCIC page from applicant (shows 'Open/In Progress', medical is passed)

My wife will be visiting me tomorrow for the next six days, and she is flying in. Her eligibility remains in process for the time being!

She will have travel insurance, proof of address, return ticket, letter from employer, etc. to assure border control that she is indeed leaving on Sunday.

I'd say she's more than covered with all of that info. I always crossed the border into Canada with no return ticket (I drove in the first time so my round trip tickets were then originating in Canada) and was never asked about it. But I always brought a full printed copy of my sponsorship package (probably overkill but better safe than sorry) which included the receipt of payment for fees. Just tell her to make sure she says she is visiting and she should be fine. They just want to make sure she isn't moving here. Honestly, she might hand over her passport and they won't even ask about it. It happened to me a few times!

Nothing... still in process, no email. Pretty crushed. Now sitting here wondering what's going on. Maybe since the FBI was sent in August it slowed things down? But others did the same and it had no impact.

Happy to hear you got the CoPR email though, must be a big relief.

I have a question for you guys, I just wrote to my lawyer to ask her if she linked my application to MyCIC in order to be able to follow the updates and she answered me that this option is not possible for Outland PR applications. It's only for Inland.... true ?

not sure what COPR "email" you are referring to. generally, a visa exempt applicant does not receive an approval email. unless this is a new thing, generally the only thing received is the COPR by regular mail. there is usually no other notification except for mycic or ecas.

1. no, your sponsor does not have to be with you at the landing.
2. landing at a local cic office requires a scheduled appointment. depending on the office, it can take weeks or months to get an appointment. landing at a border is quicker and easier for most.

myCIC is for ANY immigration application, regardless of the stream, and many outland applicants can link their application. she doesn't know what she's talking about. MyCIC is relatively new, so that may be why.

this definitely must be a new thing. ottawa has never sent emails like that before. is it from the visa office or was it an automated email from MyCIC?

She is probably unaware that outland apps can now be linked, as mine wasn't aware either. That said, representatives have their own paid portal. They and you cannot link the application in myCIC if it is managed through their existing portal. I went through this with my representative and he tried multiple apps and couldn't get it to work.

So I guess I'll stick with Ecas.

Thank you for the answers!
